HYPNOTHERAPY FAQ'S - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a safe, pleasant and natural state that we go into several times during the day without being aware. Have you ever lost yourself in a good book or a TV program without being aware of time passing by? It is estimated that we spend 4 hours of our day in hypnosis! Hypnosis is also the state we enter every night just before we fall asleep and this is also known as the hypnogogic state.

There is nothing mystical about hypnosis. Hypnosis itself is a trance state characterized by mental and physical relaxation, heightened awareness and increased suggestibility. Hypnosis opens up the doorway to our unconscious mind (the seat of our emotions) allowing us to make changes in our behaviours at the deepest level.

Is Hypnosis safe?

Yes. Hypnosis is a natural, safe state associated with deep mental and physical relaxation. Hypnosis is a state we enter into every night just before we fall asleep and one we enter several times during the day too. Have you ever lost yourself in a novel or driven to work quite unaware of the actual journey? Furthermore the hypnotic state benefits our overall well-being.

Can I be hypnotized?

Yes. Everyone has the capability to be hypnotized. All you need to do is want to be!

Can I get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?

No. Even if, for whatever reason, the trance is not terminated you will automatically come out of trance by yourself. Hypnosis is just a state of deep relaxation.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is blissfully relaxing and calming. It is a total mind and body relaxation where you feel calm and serene whilst remaining alert and focused. You are aware of everything whilst in hypnosis and are in control at all times. There is no mysticism to hypnosis – it is a natural and safe 'trance' like state and it is the same state of mind that one reaches during meditation, thus providing the same health and emotional benefits. The hypnotic state on its own has proven health benefits as it allows us time to switch off both mentally and physically.

Is hypnosis like sleep?

No. Unlike sleep you remain alert and aware of your surroundings and what is being said.

Do I remain in control during hypnosis?

During hypnosis you remain aware of everything around you and what is being said. You are in control at all time and will not do anything or say anything against your will. You will experience a wonderfully relaxing and calm state of mind where you remain completely aware and your mind is highly focused.

How many sessions will I need?

Every client is different and every problem or issue is unique to the individual. Some clients may only need 1 or 2 sessions, however for emotional issues clients may require between 2 and 6 sessions. Issues such as depression may require more. Smoking cessation is a one session treatment.

What is the difference between clinical and analytical hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy (suggestion hypnotherapy) uses the power of suggestion and hypnosis to re-programme our unconscious mind. It can be used to treat habits and simple problems such as confidence issues, weight and pain management.

Analytical hypnotherapy (hypnoanalysis) is used to treat psychological or emotional issues. It works on the principle of cause and effect which states that for every illness (effect) there is a cause and hypnoanalysis seeks to uncover the origins of the problem and resolve them to release the associated symptoms.

Do you give any guarantees?

No. The General Hypnotherapy Register regards guarantees within hypnotherapy as unethical. Just as doctors can not guarantee any surgery, course of medication etc, will work, a hypnotherapist can not either.  If I feel that hypnotherapy will not resolve an issue, I will inform you. However I can guarantee that the processes and the programmes (weight loss/anxiety/stop smoking) do work and are highly successful.
