What is a Phobia?
A phobia is an irrational fear or avoidance of a situation or thing. Someone with a phobia knows their fear is not logical however if you have a phobia of spiders, this logic does not stop you running when you encounter a spider in your bath. Where there is conflict between our emotion (fear) and logic (it’s only a spider), our emotion (scream and run) will always win.
If you have a fear or phobia then you know the terror associated with your fear or phobia and how much this impacts on your life. The fear or phobic response is programmed in your mind - and can over time cause tremendous anxiety and even panic.
There are two main types of phobias. A simple phobia Is where the sufferer has an irrational fear of a specific object or situation. The most common simple phobia is a fear of animals, especially dogs, mice, snakes or insects.
A complex phobia involves several irrational fears which can cause major distress impacting negatively on all areas of the sufferer’s life. Agoraphobia and social phobia are examples of complex phobias.
Fear of Flying, Fear of Heights – logical fears
When you consider a fear of flying or even a fear of heights we can ‘see’ the logic behind the fear, however, that does not make the fear of flying any less manageable or obtrusive in our lives. Statistics show that air travel is the safest method of transport – but that fact alone will not placate the anxious flyer!
